Energy is powering the global rise of artificial intelligence, according to Aramco’s Executive Vice President of Technology & Innovation, Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, who spoke at the Adopt AI International Summit in Paris. He emphasized that AI’s explosive growth is inseparable from the massive energy systems required to run data-heavy infrastructure worldwide.
Al-Khowaiter stated that AI is not only increasing global energy demand but also transforming how energy is produced, managed, and optimized. Last year alone, data centers consumed nearly 415 TWh of electricity almost equal to France’s entire annual power consumption. By 2030, this figure is expected to more than double, driven by AI workloads, cloud expansion, and next-generation computing.
He also highlighted Aramco’s expanding collaborations with French technology companies. Aramco Ventures is now opening a new office in Paris to boost investment in future technologies across Europe. One key milestone is the partnership with Pasqal Quantum Computing, which recently resulted in the installation of Saudi Arabia’s first industrial quantum computer at Aramco’s Dhahran headquarters.
Al-Khowaiter added that Aramco operates some of the Middle East’s most powerful supercomputers and has developed the energy industry’s first industrial Large Language Model, supported by over 90 years of proprietary data. In 2024, the company generated $4 billion in technology realized value, with AI contributing nearly half of that impact.
As global energy demand is expected to rise sharply by 2050 especially in emerging economies — the executive emphasized that AI will be critical in delivering energy that is more efficient, sustainable, and affordable.
